Volkswagen is recalling 800,000 vehicles due to faulty brake lights, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recalled vehicle models include: New Beetles, Jettas, Golf/GTIs and R 32s which include the 4th generation 1999-2005 Jetta sedans, 2001-2005 Jetta Wagons, 2003-2007 New Beetle Convertibles, 1999-2006 Golf/GTIs and the 2004 R32, all which were manufactured within the United States.

At times, the brake lights and brake light switches malfunction and do not work properly and sometimes the break lights remain on.

This recall expands a previous recall by Volkswagen last year when 362,000 Jetta's and New Beetles were recalled because of this same defective car part.

Volkswagen dealers will be accepting service appointments to perform repairs free-of-charge. They are not planning to notify vehicle owners until April.
